FREAKENSTEIN x DMX KREW interview

Welcome to the first in a series of chats i have with some of the artists that inspire me and influenced my own style of playing and producing. First up is a man that needs little introduction if you are familiar with electronic music:

Ed Upton or DMX KREW as most will know him, has a long history in the game and ridiculous discography full on gems and bombs. Never one to stick to a particular style, his spectrum is wide and deep. His live sets have been rocking clubs and festivals all over the globe and he is regarded as one of the pioneers of Electro and Techno in the UK alongside artists like Carl Finlow and Radioactive Man to name a few of his peers. To give you an example of how much i rate Ed , I always have about 4 or 5 of his records in my bag at any one time and numerous tracks on my hardrive. You can guarantee at least one of his tracks in every set I play especially the earlier stuff like the MPC Trax Series he did on his brilliant Breakin’ Records label.

It’s a real pleasure to have this chat with Ed and i hope you’ll enjoy it as much as i did.

FREAKY @ IICON

One of the highlights of my musical journey as Freakenstein so far happened in June 23’ at the legendary Glastonbury Festival in Somerset , England. I’m one of a handful of very fortunate DJ’s to be a resident in one of the most incredible fields every year on that solstice weekend . I play for Block9 - a creative collective representing the 🏳️‍🌈 LGBTQ+ community whilst setting the bar extremely high with their part time fantasies that they build for one weekend only .

As well as the mind blowing NYC Downlow , a perfect recreation of a downtown meatpacking tenement that hosts the most unbelievable disco inside, there is IICON.

Bag in Japan

I’m a bit like a magpie when it comes to good design. Anything that looks well made or designed with an eye for detail then I am instantly drawn to it. This was the case last year when i happened upon an exciting new start up business based in Japan.

As some of you reading this will know I am a professional DJ and I also love the great outdoors. I’m a bit of a boy scout at heart and love anything to do with bush craft and camping. That’s why when i saw this new hybrid bag i did a back flip. Finally there was something on the market that I could take on my adventures wether they were into the wilderness or into the concrete jungles to go and play records. I assure you, this is going to be my go to bag for the festival season as well, when you need to be light on your feet, stacked, packed & ready for action in all weather conditions and on all terrains.

The bags are made to order, made with the upmost care and built to last. Upon receiving mine I put it to work straight away and was thrilled with how beautifully crafted it was. I could tell that whoever was behind this design was highly skilled and decided that I needed to know more about the operation. What follows is a short interview with the brains behind my favourite new bag.

The Best Things In Life Are Freak

Welcome everyone to my freaky corner of cyber space. A place where you can find all my weird and wonderful happenings, latest mixes and music plus this new blog where i will be writing about whatever the fuck i like and anything that makes me get my freak on. You can expect to read about records i like, DJs i love, Interviews, reviews and spotlights on all sorts of events, festivals, mixes etc that light me up and give me inspiration.

My first appearance as Freakenstein was at Gottwood 2019 and was well received not only by the crowd but also by Resident Advisor who included me in their top 5 performances of the festival . Apparently i knocked DJ Stingray out of the selection with my performance which was nice to hear as he is one of my inspirations, a real beacon of light and a vanguard in the electronic dance scene. With this fresh gust of wind under my wings I then went on to perform at other festivals and continued to turn some heads with my own unique take on electro, breaks and techno.
